One of the best examples to illustrate the “safety first” principle is in packing dishes and stemware. Glass, china, and porcelain are all prone to breakage during a move and can pose a safety issue for those handling the boxes. In the case of glasses stemware, a moving box with dividers is the best way to pack them. Each individual piece should be wrapped in tissue paper and placed in a compartment by itself. The cardboard dividers will keep them from touching one another, reducing the risk of breakage.

Another area of concern when packing safely is that of moving furniture. The heavier and more bulky a given piece of furniture is, the higher the risk of back injuries and property damage. Dining room tables, for example, tend to be difficult to move. If your dining room table has detachable legs, and most do, take the extra time to remove the legs before loading the truck. Reducing the weight and size of the table makes for safer moving.

Finally, "safety first" is a practice that absolutely must be applied to moving household chemicals. Spilled chemicals can damage boxes and their contents, cause skin irritation or burns, and even create a toxic environment if they mix together. When moving household chemicals ensure you secure all lids and screw-on tops with packing tape or duct tape. Pack them in a cardboard box and fill the empty space so that containers cannot move around during transport.
